About

nano-porous solutions limited (n-psl), an award-winning high technology filtration company based in the North East of England was set up in 2007 to create and commercialise innovative energy efficient filtration technology.

n-psl develops, manufactures and markets patented multi-layer adsorbent hollow fibre material used in separation and filtration processes. This revolutionary technology, originally developed by the University of Bath, will significantly cut the energy consumption in a wide range of applications, including compressed air treatment.

A wide range of adsorbents can be used to produce the multi-layer hollow fibres, which can be “custom made” to customers’ requirements. Fibres are being developed for the adsorption of water, carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds from gas streams. Presenting the adsorbent materials in a fibre structure overcomes a number of technical challenges associated with granular materials, opening up new markets and enabling the use of adsorbent fibres into applications that were impossible to access previously.

n-psl has also developed and patented (applied for) a fibre with a resistive heater outer layer which facilitates rapid heating of the adsorbent for regeneration and has adsorption kinetics 3-5 times faster than existing technology.

This exciting, step change technology will enable cycle times (for regeneration) to be reduced by an order of magnitude, leading to more compact product designs. The process will be highly energy efficient – it is estimated that purge gas requirements will be significantly reduced (<5% purge will be required), as compared with current systems can require up to 25% purge. In summary, the adsorbent hollow fibre structure will deliver products which are:-

- More compact
- Highly energy efficient
- Composite construction
- Operate in any orientation

n-psl’s adsorbent hollow fibre technology is highly novel and has significant market potential, some of which has been identified and is being developed into saleable products. One of the early targets for commercialization of the technology is the compressed air treatment market, where n-psl are looking to introduce a highly efficient adsorption dryer.
